FC Lose Out to Rugby in Five-Goal Thriller

Late ‘Sucker-Punch’ Denies the Bears...

FC Stratford suffered an agonising 3-2 defeat against Rugby Town in an enthralling encounter under the floodlights at the Arden Garages Stadium. In a game that included two missed penalties, a broken goal drought, and a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser, it was ultimate heartbreak for the Bears, who conceded a late winner that denied them a hard-earned point.

After a frantic start, FC were handed an immediate scare in the 7th minute. Sam Cooksey was beaten to a through ball by Rugby's dangerous winger Aaron Nuttall, who then drew a foul from the goalkeeper. Fortunately for the hosts, Louis Samuels dragged the resulting penalty wide.

The Bears soon settled, playing fluidly through midfield, and created their first opening when Lucinee Donzo fired over from a partially cleared corner. However, Nuttall continued to pose a threat down FC’s right side, creating a brace of half-chances for the Valley.

Disaster almost struck again after 32 minutes when a poor back-pass from right-back Zach McKenzie left Cooksey in trouble, resulting in the keeper bringing down Rivel Mardenborough for a second Rugby penalty. Incredibly, Mardenborough blazed his spot-kick high over the bar, gifting FC a double let-off.

FC dug deep under sustained Rugby pressure; Nuttall shot wide, before Rugby hit the post and had the follow-up cleared off the line. Late in the opening period, FC's talismanic midfielder Dan Atkins was fouled 25 yards from goal, only for Kobe Hall’s subsequent free-kick to clear the crossbar. Remarkably, the Bears reached half-time level at 0-0.

The second half began with FC defying expectations to take a 51st-minute lead. From a Rugby set-piece, Aksum White led a rapid breakaway down the left, before delivering a low cross that Town keeper Ash Bodycote could only parry. Donzo was on hand to bundle the ball home from close range, marking FC’s first goal in nearly seven hours of football.

FC’s joy was short-lived, however. Valley substitute Zidan Sutherland made an instant impression, forcing a low save from Cooksey, before Mardenborough found space on the edge of the area in the 60th minute to fire home an equaliser.

Rugby piled forward, but FC remained solid in their defensive shape, battling hard to limit the visitors to long-range efforts. With 75 minutes on the clock, a brave piece of defending from a dangerous Rugby free-kick left Cooksey requiring five minutes of medical attention before he could continue.

After surviving earlier warnings, the Bears’ resistance was broken in the 83rd minute when Sutherland beat his man and rifled a low drive past Cooksey at his near post to make it 2-1 to Rugby.

Entering nine minutes of added time, Archie Bales picked out Toby Nicoll with a deep cross, but the striker couldn't guide his header on target. Then, in the 95th minute, Atkins won the ball deep in his own half and played it wide to McKenzie. Continuing a lung-bursting run into the box, Atkins met McKenzie's return cross with a brilliant diving header to level the scores at 2-2.

But the drama was far from over. In the 98th minute, Jake Duffy's corner was headed home by Sam Tye to snatch all three points for Rugby, leaving the FC players devastated as the final whistle blew on a heartbreaking defeat.

Rugby dominated throughout but were guilty of missing a string of chances including two first half penalties and were then stung by two counter-attack goals by the hosts but ultimately Valley found a way to get the three points.

Louis Samuels missed the target with an early penalty which was awarded after Aaron Nuttall was fouled by home goalkeeper Sam Cooksey.

Then Rivel Mardenborough had the chance himself to score from the spot after he was fouled by Cooksey but he slipped as he struck the ball and ballooned it over the bar.

The hosts took a shock lead just after half time with a good counter-attack to a Rugby attacking free-kick with Ash Bodycote parrying Aksum White's low cross into the path of Lucinee Donzo who turned the ball into the net from close range.

Mardenborough made up for his earlier miss to equalise when he collected Nuttall's pass before smashing a shot past Cooksey from just outside the box.

Substitutes combined to finally see Rugby lead for the first time when Tye turned a neat ball round the corner into the area to Zidan Sutherland who caught Cooksey out with a powerful shot at the near post.

With nine minutes of stoppage time to see out Rugby allowed Stratford to gain some momentum and they got their reward with a 94th-minute equaliser as Daniel Atkins arrived to head in Zach Mackenzie's cross.

But there was still time for Tye to head in the winner from Jake Duffy's corner to send the travelling Valley fans ecstatic.
