Real Bedford 3 v 2 Cockfosters

Saturday 30th December 2023, Kick-off 15.00
Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division
McMullen Park, Bedford
Admission: £8.00
Programme: £2.50
Attendance: 282

For my final game of 2023, I decided on a visit to a club which is doing things rather differently, and intriguingly, and who are in great form on the pitch. It would also allow me to complete my visits to all grounds in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division.

McMullen Park is about a 20 minute bus ride from Bedford bus station - which is about a ten minute walk from Bedford train station. It lies virtually adjacent to The New Eyrie, home ground of Bedford Town and current tenants Biggleswade FC. Indeed, that is what has put me off visiting McMullen Park before now, that I had visited the complex in 2021. A short lane takes visitors past the back of the New Eyrie, and to a kiosk, where admission is paid for and a printed programme may be obtained. The clubhouse is situated just beyond the entrance kiosk, housed in a raised portakabin which is certainly a busy environment, with a club shop set up inside, with a range far beyond what would normally be readily expected at this level, a mix of chairs and comfy sofas are spread out around the rest of the room, a TV screen shows highlights of recent Real Bedford games. and refreshments are available from the bar. Beyond the clubhouse, the lane continues down to the ground itself. All of the facilities are along one length, with a fairly small stand straddling the half way line, decorated in club colours of orange and black, with the left half continuing individual plastic seats and the right half containing bench seating. Further along, there is a converted unit which seems to have been a cabin at Luton Airport in a previous life, with a clock on the end showing when the next bus to the airport will leave. Inside, there are two rows of wooden benching. There is just hard standing around the rest of the ground, and with a busy road located immeditately beyond the opposite length, this certainly isn't a quiet nor peaceful venue, nor, in all honesty, was there a lot of charm about the place on a dank, overcast afternoon like today. Although the printed programme was on the expensive side, it was of good quality, in full colour, and had plenty of information to digest. An electronic version can be downloaded from the club website.

In their first season since the previous Bedford FC were taken over by Bitcoin entrepreneur Peter McCormack in 2022, the renamed club Real Bedford were promoted as champions from Division One last season, and are currently on course for back to back promotions, as they came into this game top of the Premier Division, following 19 wins and a draw from their 21 league games, with the solitary defeat coming in mid September, they have won their most recent games 0-7 away and 6-0 at home, and average almost four goals a game, having scored 82 goals. Cockfosters are one of only two clubs to have taken points off of Real Bedford this season, after securing a 1-1 draw back in August.  They came into this game in ninth place, following seven wins and six draws from their 18 league games, and have games in hand on all clubs above them.

On a cool and dank afternoon, the long spells this wasn't the most exciting game to watch, with Real Bedford happy to play possession football and dictate the pace of the game, while Cockfosters seemed to be happy to let them have the ball and be solid in defence. But in the 14th minute, Real Bedford took the lead after a Cockfosters goal kick was headed back from the half way line for Joey Evans to run onto, and played the ball out to Mo Ahmed, who showed some good footwork to create some space before shooting low across the keeper and inside the far post. But the visitors would get back on level terms a minute before the break, when the ball was swung beyond the far post, headed back across goal, and George Lutaaya tapped the ball home from from close range.

The scoreline remained level until the 74th minute, when Real Bedford went back into the lead. The ball was lofted down the left wing into the path of Ahmed, he played in Archie Jones who, from a slightly tight angle, drilled the ball low past the keeper and into the net. It looked like that was to be the winning goal, until the 90th minute when out of the blue Cockfosters managed to get themselves back on level terms, Jay Lovell heading a corner home at the back post. But there was still time for plenty of late drama to come. Cockfosters had several opportunities to clear a corner, but were eventually punished for failing to do so, when the ball was curled into the danger area, deflected off a Cockfosters player and landed at the feet of Jones, who struck the ball low through a crowd of players and past the keeper. But Cockfosters still had time to come oh so close to a third equaliser. First, in the 97th minute, another goalbound Lovell header from a corner was this time headed away, and then, in the 13th minute of added on time, Reece Barrett struck a free kick from just outside the area against the crossbar via the fingertips of the keeper, and from the resultant corner, the ball was headed wide, with the final whistle blowing immediately afterwards.

And so Real Bedford's apparent relentless march to a second successive title continues, but Cockfosters gave them a real scare, coming so close to claiming a second draw against Real Bedford this season.

Roffey 2 v 1 Dorking Wanderers B

Wednesday 27th December 2023, Kick-off 19.30
Southern Combination League Division One
Hop Oast Stadium, Horsham
Admission: £7.00
Programme: Free
Attendance: 125

For my next instalment of post Christmas action this evening, I decided to head to Horsham, attracted by this top of the table clash, and also the opportunity to catch up with an old friend who was also going. I had targetted this game a little while ago actually, hoping to revisit Roffey’s home ground at Bartholomew Way, dubbed the "Theatre of Trees", for the first time since Christmas Eve in 2011. But with poor weather forecast, Roffey sensibly decided to switch this game to Horsham FC's home ground, with its 3G pitch ensuring the game would certainly go ahead.

After a one season stay in the Premier Division, which saw them finish bottom of the table, Roffey have made an excellent start in attempting to get another crack at the higher division next season, coming into this game in second place in the table, following 12 wins and two draws from their 16 league games, and trail leaders, and tonight's visitors, Dorking Wanderers B, by 2 points, with two games in hand. Dorking Wanderers B have won 12 and drawn four of their 18 league games.

And so the game continued for most of the second half, as Roffey struggled to get any kind of foothold in the game. But then Roffey levelled on 82 minutes when Joao Andrade met a corner with a near post flicked header to divert the ball inside the left hand post. Dorking Wanderers B came close to restoring their lead on 85 minutes, when Luke Bejashvili struck a lovely shot from outside of the area which was heading for the top right corner, but the keeper pulled off an excellent fingertip save to divert the ball wide. And in the 90th minute, Roffey pulled off something of a smash and grab, when they scored what turned out to be the winner. Following a Dorking corner, Roffey broke away straight down the other end, with a good quick passing move played in Thomas Tolfrey, and although his initial shot came back off the left hand post, the ball bounced back to him, he crossed the ball low, hitting the outstretched leg of a defender, bouncing off the post and into his own net.

So, a dramatic and rather unexpected finish saw Roffey leapfrog above Dorking Wanderers to lead the table by a point, and still with two games in hand.

East Grinstead Town 0 v 3 Sevenoaks Town

Boxing Day Tuesday 26th December 2023, Kick-off 15.00
Isthmian League South East Division
East Court, East Grinstead
Admission: £10.00
Programme: Online Only
Attendance: 161

Following my morning game at Crowborough, I then made my way across the Ashdown Forest for my first visit to East Court in exactly ten years, during East Grinstead Town's promotion season before their first taste of Isthmian League football, where they have stayed ever since, despite many close shaves.

East Grinstead have had a reasonable start to their season, coming into this game in 13th place in the 20 club division, following five wins and a draw from their opening 18 league games, but they had lost their last two league games. Sevenoaks have had a very decent start to their season, up in sixth place in the table, following seven wins and four draws from their 16 league games, although they had only picked up one point from three games played in December.

On a mostly cloudy, slightly chilly afternoon, but with the pitch in excellent condition, this game had an explosive start to it, with the visitors opening the scoring inside the first 20 seconds when the ball was played forward towards the edge of the area, and Daniel Bennett had all the time in the world to drill in a low shot into the bottom left corner from the edge of the area. The game soon settled down though, into a pattern which saw Sevenoaks always looking to take their time to think and play good quick passing football, always looking too good for the hosts, who actually were not playing too badly themselves. The visitors doubled their lead on 31 minutes, when Daniel Carr fired home from the edge of the area, and although East Grinstead occasionally threatened to get back into the game, the three points were all but secured for the visitors on 64 minutes, when Emmanuel Mensah sprinted down the right, the keeper came out to the wing to close him down, only for Mensah to take the ball around him, before judging his shot from a tight angle close to the wing to perfection, steering the ball into the empty net.

The win kept Sevenoaks in sixth place in the table, although now just a point adrift of fifth place and with it the final play-off berth, while East Grinstead remain in 13th place, although now are just five points clear of the bottom two.

Crowborough Athletic 3 v 0 AFC Uckfield Town

Boxing Day Tuesday 26th December 2023, Kick-off 11.00
Southern Combination League Premier Division
Community Stadium, Crowborough
Admission: £8.00
Programme: £1.00
Attendance: 435

For this year's Boxing Day action, I decided to visit two clubs I used to visit fairly regularly when I lived in the area, starting with this local derby, with less than ten miles along the A26 separating the two clubs.

On the pitch though, there seems to be quite a wide gulf between the clubs this season, with Crowborough pushing hard for promotion to the Isthmian League for the first time since their one season stay there in the 2008/9 season, while AFC Uckfield Town look like having a tough battle ahead to avoid relegation to the second tier of the Southern Combination League. Crowborough came into this game in second place in the table, level on points with leaders Newhaven but with a game in hand, following 14 wins and 2 draws from their 18 league games, and have won nine of their last nine league games, and lost just once from their last eleven league games. AFC Uckfield Town were down in 19th place in the 20 club division, following two wins and four draws from their 20 league games. But their last win came way back in mid August, and had lost their last five league games, including 7-0 and 6-0 defeats, the latter coming on Saturday.

Unfortunately, with a cooked breakfast intended to set me up for the day late in being served, I unfortunately missed the first few minutes of this game, entering the ground just as the first goal was scored, on 6 minutes, when Harvey Killick met a cross with a diving header. It soon became apparent that this would be a very one sided encounter, and the game was as good as over with barely a quarter of an hour on the clock. The home side doubled their lead on 15 minutes, after an initial shot was cleared on the line but eventually the ball was bundled home by Lewis Unwin, and within a minute, Crowborough scored their third, when a peach of a cross was guided home by Jacob Feasey. At that stage, it was looking like things could turn very ugly for Uckfield, so in control were the hosts and the biggest impact the visitors could make was strong challenges and fouls. However, the game settled down and surprisingly there was to be no further scoring, with the second half proving to be something of a non-event, with Uckfield much improved and looking a lot more solid, while Crowborough had clearly taken their foot off of the gas. But it mattered little as Crowborough kept the pressure up at the top of the table, remaining level at the top of the table with Newhaven, who also won their local derby at Peacehaven this morning.
