Servette wins a very dull derby against Sion
Derby doesn't rhyme with spectacle, and this was confirmed this Wednesday at Tourbillon where Sion and Servette far from thrilled the 10,000 spectators present. It's quite simple, at the break, not a single shot was on target from either side.
Unknowingly, Joël Mall made a decisive save in front of Benjamin Kololli, who was wrongly flagged offside by one of Luca Cibelli's assistant referees (28th minute). Like the fans of both camps, he could only note the technical weakness of a first half undoubtedly spoiled by the stakes of the game between two teams with completely different shapes.
First period without relief
Servette had their foot on the ball (63%), trying to find a solution in the second best defense in the country before the match, in vain. Or almost, since the Grenat were still credited with six attempts, all without danger for Anthony Racioppi. The spectacle thus took place in the stands where the ultras of both camps shared their love for the opposing side by surfing on the news: from the confusion in the ultras sections on the Grenat side to the injury of Christian Constantin on the Sédunois side.
All that remained was to hope for some excitement in the second half. In an attempt to shake things up, Didier Tholot decided to make three changes. Josias Lukembila replaced Ilyas Chouaref, Théo Bouchlarhem took over from Théo Berdayes, and Donat Rrudhani, making his debut for FC Sion, replaced Benjamin Kololli. Jocelyn Gourvennec made no changes.
Samuel Mraz scores twice then leaves
And the Breton saw his team open the scoring in the 59th minute, with his first shot on target. Samuel Mraz, well found by a cross from the right side of Lilian Njoh, took advantage of a disorganized Valais defense to leave Anthony Racioppi no chance. The Sion team responded directly through Rilind Nivokazi who, after outwitting Dylan Bronn, saw his shot skim the right post of Joël Mall (61st).
It seemed as though the game might finally be underway, but that was without counting on a second goal from the Slovakian international. He took advantage of a mix-up, followed by a miraculous save from the Sion goalkeeper, to find the back of the net (67th minute). This was enough to make Christian Constantin want to leave Tourbillon before the end of the match and kill off the Valaisans' hopes of a comeback, as they were hoping to knock off their rivals from across the lake on their home turf five years later. But it was SFC who won their first match of the season on Wednesday evening.
