Cowdenbeath fight back from goal down to beat Gretna

Cowdenbeath 4 - 2 Gretna 2008

Cowdenbeath had to overcome a first-half deficit to overcome a Gretna side who fell to the bottom of the Lowland League following their Central Park defeat.

The Anvils had transportation problems en route north, and the game was delayed by 15 minutes after they had arrived at 2.35 p.m.

Their travel problems didn’t seem to hinder them, and in the second minute, a cross from Sean McKenzie was met by Kayn Cranson, who saw his shot deflected for a corner.

Two minutes later, at the other end, Dylan Mauchin latched onto a long ball and raced into the box but saw his shot blocked.

Midway through the first half, Mauchin tried his luck with a 35-yard free-kick, but keeper Jim Atkinson dived at his right-hand post to save his effort.

The keeper then saved a Rhys Walker effort while Dion Gear turned a McKenzie shot around the post at the expense of a corner.

Gear was then called into action again when a Liam Short corner was met by McKenzie, whose header was saved by the keeper.

The Anvils took the lead five minutes from the break when a 16-yard shot from Robbie Ivison took a defection as it flew into the home goal.

Cowden made two changes at the break, with Max Williamson and Darren Downie replacing Rhys Walker and Zack Tomany.

The changes paid off seven minutes into the second half when Jack Denham fired in a cross to the back post, which Sam Newman headed into the path of Downie to tap home.

Four minutes later, Cowden went in front when Nat Wedderburn headed home from a Dylan Mauchin cross.

With 65 minutes gone, it was 3-1 when Dylan Mauchin fired home at the second attempt after Atkinson had blocked his initial effort.

Paul McLean, who had brought himself on to replace Wedderburn, then fired home a fourth goal with 15 minutes to go following another corner from Williamson.

As the game wound down, McLean saw a 19-yard shot saved by Atkinson while another sub, Liam Watt, was denied by the keeper.

Then, a minute into stoppage time, Iain Anderson pulled a goal back for Gretna from the penalty spot after he had been fouled in the box by Jack Denham.
