Last gasp equaliser denies Bexhill victory in ding dong battle at the Polegrove

By Geoff Martin

An equaliser deep into injury time secured Eastbourne United a point in a classic derby night fixture with Bexhill United under the Polegrove lights on Wednesday.
A healthy midweek crowd of 153 saw United take a lead on five minutes with former Bexhill player Ollie Hull finishing cleanly when space opened up for him in the early exchanges.

Bexhill came back strongly and benefitted from the return of influential skipper Richie Welch and left winger Ryan Moir. Eastbourne keeper Alex Hobden was kept busy and the ref waved away at least one strong penalty shout for the home side as the play ebbed and flowed up and down the park.

Eastbourne went in at the break one up and nearly doubled their lead soon after when a speculative cross pinged off the Bexhill bar but it was the Pirates who were celebrating a few minutes later when a brilliant chip from Jack Shonk into the box saw Charlie Playford finish with a skilfully placed header that floated over Hobden and into the net.

Bexhill were now firing on all cylinders and the introduction of the experienced striker Nathan Crabb, signed earlier in the week, added fresh impetus as they sought out a winner. Within minutes of coming on Crabb went close with a header and was causing mayhem leading the line. On 66 minutes Hobden was called upon to make another great save to keep his side on level terms.

The strike that gave Bexhill the lead on 77 minutes was yet another early contender for goal of the season, a great delivery into the box from Shonk was cleared out only as far as Max Hollobone and from a good twenty yards he bent the ball into the top corner.

Eastbourne weren’t done yet and put the Bexhill goal under some serious pressure as the minutes ticked down. In injury time Halsey came close and it was a warning shot for the Pirates as on 95 minutes Mo Huchu fired the ball home after a goal mouth scramble.

It was a kicker for Bexhill after having turned the game around but for the neutral it was one hell of a game of football and great advert for the Southern Combination League. Bexhill’s next home game is on Saturday 4th October and the club have cut admission prices for the day and are looking to build a big crowd under the banner of Football For A Fiver.

Cowdenbeath fight back from goal down to beat Gretna

Cowdenbeath 4 - 2 Gretna 2008

Cowdenbeath had to overcome a first-half deficit to overcome a Gretna side who fell to the bottom of the Lowland League following their Central Park defeat.

The Anvils had transportation problems en route north, and the game was delayed by 15 minutes after they had arrived at 2.35 p.m.

Their travel problems didn’t seem to hinder them, and in the second minute, a cross from Sean McKenzie was met by Kayn Cranson, who saw his shot deflected for a corner.

Two minutes later, at the other end, Dylan Mauchin latched onto a long ball and raced into the box but saw his shot blocked.

Midway through the first half, Mauchin tried his luck with a 35-yard free-kick, but keeper Jim Atkinson dived at his right-hand post to save his effort.

The keeper then saved a Rhys Walker effort while Dion Gear turned a McKenzie shot around the post at the expense of a corner.

Gear was then called into action again when a Liam Short corner was met by McKenzie, whose header was saved by the keeper.

The Anvils took the lead five minutes from the break when a 16-yard shot from Robbie Ivison took a defection as it flew into the home goal.

Cowden made two changes at the break, with Max Williamson and Darren Downie replacing Rhys Walker and Zack Tomany.

The changes paid off seven minutes into the second half when Jack Denham fired in a cross to the back post, which Sam Newman headed into the path of Downie to tap home.

Four minutes later, Cowden went in front when Nat Wedderburn headed home from a Dylan Mauchin cross.

With 65 minutes gone, it was 3-1 when Dylan Mauchin fired home at the second attempt after Atkinson had blocked his initial effort.

Paul McLean, who had brought himself on to replace Wedderburn, then fired home a fourth goal with 15 minutes to go following another corner from Williamson.

As the game wound down, McLean saw a 19-yard shot saved by Atkinson while another sub, Liam Watt, was denied by the keeper.

Then, a minute into stoppage time, Iain Anderson pulled a goal back for Gretna from the penalty spot after he had been fouled in the box by Jack Denham.

Servette wins a very dull derby against Sion

Derby doesn't rhyme with spectacle, and this was confirmed this Wednesday at Tourbillon where Sion and Servette far from thrilled the 10,000 spectators present. It's quite simple, at the break, not a single shot was on target from either side.

Unknowingly, Joël Mall made a decisive save in front of Benjamin Kololli, who was wrongly flagged offside by one of Luca Cibelli's assistant referees (28th minute). Like the fans of both camps, he could only note the technical weakness of a first half undoubtedly spoiled by the stakes of the game between two teams with completely different shapes.

First period without relief

Servette had their foot on the ball (63%), trying to find a solution in the second best defense in the country before the match, in vain. Or almost, since the Grenat were still credited with six attempts, all without danger for Anthony Racioppi. The spectacle thus took place in the stands where the ultras of both camps shared their love for the opposing side by surfing on the news: from the confusion in the ultras sections on the Grenat side to the injury of Christian Constantin on the Sédunois side.

All that remained was to hope for some excitement in the second half. In an attempt to shake things up, Didier Tholot decided to make three changes. Josias Lukembila replaced Ilyas Chouaref, Théo Bouchlarhem took over from Théo Berdayes, and Donat Rrudhani, making his debut for FC Sion, replaced Benjamin Kololli. Jocelyn Gourvennec made no changes.

Samuel Mraz scores twice then leaves

And the Breton saw his team open the scoring in the 59th minute, with his first shot on target. Samuel Mraz, well found by a cross from the right side of Lilian Njoh, took advantage of a disorganized Valais defense to leave Anthony Racioppi no chance. The Sion team responded directly through Rilind Nivokazi who, after outwitting Dylan Bronn, saw his shot skim the right post of Joël Mall (61st).

It seemed as though the game might finally be underway, but that was without counting on a second goal from the Slovakian international. He took advantage of a mix-up, followed by a miraculous save from the Sion goalkeeper, to find the back of the net (67th minute). This was enough to make Christian Constantin want to leave Tourbillon before the end of the match and kill off the Valaisans' hopes of a comeback, as they were hoping to knock off their rivals from across the lake on their home turf five years later. But it was SFC who won their first match of the season on Wednesday evening.
