Addicks excellent but lose to Leicester City

Charlton produced an excellent performance at The Valley but were undone by a single moment of quality, as ex-Premier League side Leicester City edged a 1–0 win.

The Addicks registered 20 shots on goal and pushed the visitors back for long spells, but Jakub Stolarczyk – later named Sky Sports’ Player of the Match – repeatedly denied them. A stunning 48th-minute strike from Abdul Fatawu ultimately proved the difference, despite Charlton’s relentless pressure.

Nathan Jones’ side started brightly, forcing Leicester goalkeeper Stolarczyk into early saves from Sonny Carey and Rob Apter. At the other end, Thomas Kaminski had little to trouble him, with Jordan Ayew firing wide and Louis Page volleying over. Charlton came closest when Conor Coventry unleashed a 35-yard effort that Stolarczyk tipped acrobatically over the bar.

After controlling the first half, Charlton began the second in the same fashion. From consecutive corners, Lloyd Jones saw a header cleared off the line by Hamza Choudhury, before Kayne Ramsay’s effort was pushed away smartly by Stolarczyk.

Moments later, Leicester struck. Breaking Charlton’s press, Fatawu cut inside from the right and curled an unstoppable shot beyond Kaminski.

The Addicks responded superbly. Miles Leaburn had a strike blocked, while Coventry saw another effort cleared off the line and later headed wide from close range. Stolarczyk was again called into action, saving a Leaburn header from a Josh Edwards long throw, before Caleb Okoli blocked Greg Docherty’s goalbound shot.

Charlton thought they had their equaliser late on when Lloyd Jones powered in a header from a corner, but referee Whitestone ruled it out for a foul. Tyreece Campbell then headed over from another Jones knock-down as the hosts continued to pour forward, but the elusive goal would not come.

Despite defeat, it was a performance full of spirit and attacking intent from Nathan Jones’ side.

The Addicks are back in action on Tuesday night, travelling to Cambridge United in the Carabao Cup second round.
