Match report by Dave Pyzer
High flying SPORTING CLUB INKBERROW were the latest visitors to The Talent Hire Stadium for an Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division fixture, no doubt looking to avenge their defeat in the reverse fixture, and after an entertaining and competitive match played at a fast pace the points were shared.
Prior to this match the visitors sat in 2nd place in the league table with 41 points from their 21 games played whilst Cirencester were in 16th place with 17 points from the same number of games.
In the reverse fixture, played in September, The Centurions snatched a 2-1 victory after being under pressure for much of the game.
The visitors kicked off and immediately attacked their hosts as young central defender Ed Scott was called upon to firmly head away a couple of deliveries towards the home box and within five minutes Jay Higgins-Pugsley had a shot deflected for a corner kick.
Cirencester immediately launched a neat counter attack that culminated in a Bonsa Teshome shot being blocked on the edge of the visitor’s box.
At the ten-minute mark a heavy touch from Scott provided an opening for Higgins-Pugsley but the defender did very well to recover and block the resulting shot.
A few minutes later Teshome reached the right corner and slipped the ball inside to a supporting Aidan Bennett who cut left and fired a fierce strike over the bar from 15 yards.
Almost immediately Teshome and Bennett combined again to supply Finley Bell who crossed from the right corner to the back post where ‘keeper Gabriel Bajrami was unable to make the catch enabling Harrison Reeves to collect and send the ball back into the box – cleared.
The match continued in this manner and around the mid-point of the first half Teshome had a shot destined for the top corner deflected wide and seven minutes later the home side had a strong shout for a Penalty Kick rejected when Bennett was upended.
A few minutes later the busy Jack Tolley drew a fine save from home custodian Ronnie Newbery at his right post and Bennett came close to getting the final touch to a dangerous low cross from Jordan Morris.
Five minutes from the interval Cirencester thought they had opened the scoring when Ed Scott got the final touch after a corner kick had resulted in a scramble but an ‘offside’ flag had been raised and after consultation the ‘goal’ was denied.
Just before the interval Jack Horrell sent a free kick through the 6-yard box and narrowly past the left post and this was followed by a corner kick that also passed through the 6-yard box without contact.
Half Time: 0-0
The second half continued in similar fashion as within minutes of the re-start a Tolley cross from the left flank was headed over the bar by Rahim Spencer at the back post.
Cirencester responded immediately as they worked the ball down their left flank, through the centre and down the right flank for Teshome to drive forward.
Not long afterwards the home side began another move as several players combined to reach the right byline where the visitors cleared the danger for the ball to be recycled and result in a corner kick from the other flank that Bajrami caught.
Around the hour mark Bell made a strong run down the right flank before supplying Teshome who took it to the corner and back to Horrell who sent a cross into the visitor’s box that was diverted for a corner kick – followed by an attempted overhead kick from Bell and a goal kick.
For much of the second half the touchline hugging Tolley was the outlet for the visitors as pressure was relieved by spraying passes for him to collect and dart down their left flank and from two of these attacks he fired wide of the target.
From another break he delivered a cross to the back post where William Skelton headed wide of the right post.
Just before this Bajrami had dived to his right to prevent a fine strike from Horrell finding the back of his net.
As the scheduled finish was reached Higgins-Pugsley was dismissed for a second Yellow Card so Inkberrow had to play the five minutes of added-time with ten men.
During this period Bennett chased down a ball and played it back to Lewis Thorne who delivered a superb cross into the visitor’s box that was eventually collected by Morris who exchanged passes with Reeves before his cross was blocked.
The final action of the game was a run into the home box by Tolley and cross to the back post where young Scott did well to defend from an incoming opponent.
Full Time: 0-0
A competitive and entertaining game with plenty of action at each end of the pitch but no end product so the points were shared.
