MATCH REPORT: Alfreton Town 1-0 Marine
by Towerzey Lisa
Jake Day`s second half winner defeats Mariners in first meeting in over 20 years as Reds are back in play offs
Jake Day provided the only goal of the match for Alfreton to come away victorious on Tuesday evening in what was our first encounter with Marine since 2004.
Marine was the side that would knock on the door first as Agius turned Murphy’s low-cross over the bar within the first two minutes of the match.
The visitors had a strong start to the first half and were keeping Billy Heath’s side on their toes in the early stages as no real chances would come to pass.
Both sides had shown glimpses of promise in the first half, but the sides went into the break in the ultimate deadlock with nothing note-worthy happening at the Impact Arena other than Marine’s initial chance.
Despite the first half being a war of attrition, The Reds came Flying out the gates in the second half, Billy Fewster delivered excellently into the box from a corner, which saw Liam Waldock leap highest and turn a bullet header toward goal that would come crashing back off of the crossbar, But Jake Day would pounce on the loose ball in the Marine area quickest and send the ball into the back of the net to give Alfreton the lead.
Alfreton, now with the lead, seemed to be fizzling the game out but Marine was not down and out as Murphy flashed the ball across the Alfreton 6-yard area that found a stretching Gregson at the far post who looked destined to find the back of the net.
But the outstretched leg of the midfielder wasn’t enough to steer the ball on target as his effort trickled just wide of George Willis’ left-hand post.
A battling performance from Alfreton saw them earn all three points as they saw out the one-goal lead to the end of the matchup as Day’s 6th goal of the season takes The Reds up to sixth place in the table and back into the playoffs.
Alfreton's next fixture is away to Kings Lynn on Saturday the 14th of December.

ALFRETON TOWN 1-0 MARINE
Max Ledson reports from the Impact Arena…
Marine travelled to the Impact Arena to face Alfreton in a tough, physical battle which resulted in The Reds nicking the game’s decisive goal from a set piece.
The Mariners started the game strongly with their best chance coming in the first two minutes after Calum Agius’ effort from short range was turned over the bar after great work from Kallan Murphy to win the ball back high up the pitch.
Marine had another big chance to open the scoring in the 20th minute when Joe Mattock found his attempt at goal cleared off the line.
There was very little in the way of chances for both sides for the remainder of the first half, with the game becoming very scrappy and physical.
Alfreton started the second half strongly finding the net in the 49th minute after Liam Waldock’s headed effort hit the crossbar Jake Day first to react to turn the rebound home.
Marine showed good fight as they looked to level the game, their best chance to do so came in the 78th minute. Good work again from Murphy to deliver a ball into the box which found Harvey Gregson sliding in at the back post, however he wasn’t able to get enough on the ball to turn it goalward.
The home side were comfortable sitting back and defending for the last 10 minutes to see out the game, which they did well. The Mariners sent a barrage of balls into the Alfreton area to try and force a chance. The Reds, however, kept their shape and defended well with the towering defenders able to deal with whatever Marine threw at them.
