MATCH REPORT: Sporting Khalsa 0-0 Brocton (Khalsa won on penalties)

Khalsa edge past Brocton on penalties to reach Walsall Senior Cup semi-finals.

Sporting Khalsa booked their place in the semi-finals of the Walsall Senior Cup after a penalty shootout victory over Brocton FC, following a goalless draw over 90 minutes. It was far from a vintage performance from Khalsa, who were second best for large spells of the match, but they showed resilience when it mattered most.

Brocton started the game brightly and were the stronger side throughout the first half, dominating possession and pressing Khalsa high up the pitch. The visitors looked settled early on and caused problems for Khalsa’s backline, who struggled to keep hold of the ball. Brocton continued to apply pressure, with good play between Morgan Payne and Dylan Millington in the 19th minute leading to a corner, before Payne fired narrowly wide from distance.

Despite Brocton’s control, clear-cut chances were limited in a scrappy opening period, with much of the play taking place in midfield as neither goalkeeper was seriously tested for much of the half. Khalsa came agonisingly close to taking the lead five minutes before the break, with the ball somehow cleared off the line before Kyle Langston produced a superb reaction save to deny the hosts from scoring. Khalsa finished the half with some momentum, forcing back-to-back corners, but the sides went into the break goalless.

The second half followed, with Brocton again looking the more dangerous side. Khalsa were forced to make a change in the 53rd minute when Stan Asomugha was stretchered off. Sam Fitzgerald came on to replace him. Just minutes later, Langston was called into action again, producing an outstanding save to tip Andre Landell’s curling effort away from the top corner.

Brocton had their best chance of the second half in the 66th minute when Charlie King broke into the box down the left and fired just wide of the far post. On debut, Jack Blood was called upon to make several solid saves to keep Khalsa in the contest. Substitutions followed as Kieron Whittaker and Hunter were introduced, injecting fresh energy into the hosts.

Khalsa came close late on through Hunter, whose shot was pushed away by the Brocton keeper, while Langston continued to frustrate the hosts with a series of outstanding saves, including another full-stretch stop in the final minutes of normal time. Deep into stoppage time, Chay Tilt almost curled home a dramatic winner, but once again the keeper saved it, sending the tie to penalties after no goals were scored in 90 minutes. a hard-fought 0-0 draw.

Khalsa went first, with Sam Fitzgerald stepping up and calmly slotting the ball into the net to give the hosts an early advantage. Brocton responded immediately, placing their effort into the back of the net to level the shootout at 1-1.

Andre Landell then smashed his penalty home to restore Khalsa’s lead, before Brocton struck the post with their next effort. Captain Kristian Green was unable to extend Khalsa’s advantage as he fired over the bar, allowing Brocton to draw level once again at 2-2.

Isai Marselia converted confidently to make it 3-2 Khalsa, before Brocton blasted their next penalty over the crossbar. That opened the door for Kieron Whittaker, who stepped up and smashed his spot-kick into the net to secure a 4-2 shootout victory and send Sporting Khalsa into the semi-finals.

Sporting Khalsa won 4-2 on penalties

Brocton travelled to Step 4 Sporting Khalsa in the quarter-final of the Walsall Senior Cup. As expected, Brocton made six changes to the starting eleven that took to the field at Whitchurch Alport on Saturday. The 4G pitch at Noose Lane was in perfect condition allowing the game to go ahead unlike most in the area.

Khalsa showed first with a run by Stanley Asomugha which was blocked by Kenny Devoir. Brocton had a decent chance in the fourth minute when a Connor Haddaway corner was headed wide by Devoir. Brocton were looking lively going forward with Morgan Payne prominent. In the 18th minute, Payne fed Dylan Millington and his shot was blocked by the Khalsa defence. Payne and Charlie King both had efforts just wide of the post as Brocton continued to look for goals. In the 36th minute, a back-heel from Connor Haddaway was into the path of Lucas Green-Birch but his shot was too high. Three minutes later, an overlap from Connor Haddaway ended with Payne volleying over. Khalsa went close to breaking the deadlock five minutes before the interval. A low ball in from Andre Landell was somehow bundled behind for a corner. The corner was played in, and a snap shot was well saved by the returning Kyle Langston.

The arm wrestle in the middle of the park continued after the break with neither side giving an inch. In the 56th minute, King picked out Connor Haddaway, and his drive cleared the bar. Just before the hour mark, the hosts went close to an opener. A curling shot from Landell forced a brilliant save from Langston. Luke Shearer picked up the rebound and Langston made another good stop. Christian Blanchette, on for Morgan Payne, created an opening for King but his effort was off target. Brocton went close in the 72nd minute. A header from Millington drifted wide of the goal. It was picked up by Reg Smith and his ball in was headed clear. Five minutes later, Jayden Hunter forced a low save from Langston at his near post. As the game entered the final minute, both sides were striving to avoid penalties. A shot from Blanchette was deflected for a corner. From the corner, the ball fell to Reg Smith and his low shot looked a goal all the way only to be denied by an excellent save from Jack Blood. King took the corner and Devoir’s towering header rebounded off the crossbar. With four minutes of time added on played, Chay Tilt curled a shot to the top corner and somehow Langston launched himself and plucked the ball out of the air with tremendous agility.

The full-time whistle went to send the game to penalties. After three spot kicks each, the score stood at 2-2. Khalsa converted to give them the lead which was followed by a Josh Simcox penalty over the bar. Kieron Whittaker was given the responsibility to win it for Khalsa, and he calmly slotted home to see the home side through to the semi-final.
