Addicks topple second-placed Wycombe

Charlton 2 Wycombe Wanderers 1

Charlton ended 2024 with a third successive win, beating second-placed Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 at The Valley.

The Addicks were outstanding as Miles Leaburn netted a brace shortly after half-time to extend Charlton’s unbeaten run to five games.

Nathan Jones opted for an unchanged side although a slight tactical tweak saw Tyreece Campbell maybe operating slightly wider that he had done in the Addicks wins over Northampton Town and Cambridge United.

After half chances for each side, the Addicks had the best chance of the first half in the 14th minute when Tyreece Campbell did excellently on the left, beating his man for pace to get to the byline, before cutting back for Luke Berry who couldn’t quite control his shot, which was gathered comfortably by Franco Racizzoli.

It was the second half when Nathan Jones’ side really got motoring. The Addicks started the half like they began the first half of their previous two games. Leaburn notched his first of the game in the 46th minute, connecting superbly, on the volley, from Josh Edwards’ wonderful in-swinging cross from the right.

Six minutes later Leaburn doubled his and Charlton’s tally with a wonderfully audacious scoop over the onrushing Racizzoli. The chance came after Conor Coventry’s smart dummy left Luke Berry in space, with the midfielder threading a perfectly-weighted pass through for Leaburn.

Substitute Richard Kone, pulled a goal back for the visitors to give the Addicks a scare but Charlton were comfortable during seven minutes of stoppage time to secure another three points.

The Addicks travel to Crawley Town on Wednesday before returning to The Valley for the visit of Reading on Saturday.

Report: Charlton 2-1 Wycombe
By wwfcofficial

Wanderers suffered a rare off-day as their long unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Charlton Athletic on Sunday lunchtime.

Miles Leaburn scored twice in quick succession soon after half-time to condemn the Blues to defeat in their final game of a spectacular 2024 despite Richard Kone’s late consolation, ahead of a return to Adams Park for the first of four successive home games when Exeter City visit on New Year’s Day.

Wycombe made three changes from the side that started in the comfortable 3-0 win at Stevenage on Boxing Day, with Tyreeq Bakinson facing his former club in midfield and Dan Udoh and Garath McCleary coming into the attack as Luke Leahy, Richard Kone and Fred Onyedinma moved to the bench.

Charlton, meanwhile, were unchanged after two straight wins over Northampton and Cambridge.

Beryly Lubala fizzed the first chance of the game over the bar from 25 yards, before Luke Berry saw a shot blocked and then drilled wide from a long throw at the other end.

Berry then went closer when Tyreece Campbell burst past Jack Grimmer down the left and cut it back, but the former Luton man couldn’t connect cleanly and his effort was comfortable for Franco Ravizzoli to collect.

The home side looked the more comfortable on a difficult pitch, but the game grew messy, other than a couple of smart attacks down Charlton’s wings, and some neat build-up play from Wycombe without being able to create their usual magic around the penalty area.

Campbell diverted Macaulay Gillesphey’s header over the Wanderers’ bar from a corner, before Aaron Morley had the visitors’ first effort on target on 37 minutes, curling straight at the keeper from 25 yards.

The 0-0 scoreline at half-time was a fair reflection of the game, but the breakthrough came a minute into the second period, when a long Charlton throw was recycled back into the area and Miles Leaburn stuck out a long leg to hook home the cross.

And then it got worse. The same striker stayed onside to meet a through-ball and chipped Ravizzoli to make it 2-0, prompting a quick double change from the Blues as Fred Onyedinma and Richard Kone replaced Garath McCleary and Beryly Lubala.

The game slowed right down and so Gideon Kodua and Josh Scowen came off the bench to try and inject fresh energy, as Dan Udoh and Tyreeq Bakinson made way.

But chances remained hard to come by, with Onyedinma flicking a half chance wide of the near post from Kodua’s low cross, while Campbell had a chance to wrap it up for the Addicks but ballooned over, and then they spurned a chance on a breakway when Thierry Small lashed wide.

Then hope arrived in the shape of Richard Kone’s third goal in two games as the substitute curled a superb finish into the far corner with six minutes remaining.

The referee then added on seven minutes of injury time but the Blues couldn’t find the leveller despite a succession of balls into danger, as the Addicks clung on for their third straight win.
