SSMFL,D1 Play-Off Final: Winslow United promoted to Step 5 after Sileby victory
4th May 2024 by Andy Bone

Winslow United will play Step 5 football next season!

Alex Woodfine’s side achieved it as they went to Northampton Sileby Rangers and won 3-1 on Bank Holiday Saturday afternoon.

After finishing third in Division One, United travelled to their opponents as they finished higher in the table; second versus third.

United had the perfect start as on 17 minutes they took the lead. A Simon King free-kick was floated into the area and the ball came off the home side’s head and ended up in the back of the net.

In the second half, Josh Drain came off the bench for the home side and fired home to level the scores.

United showed character and fought back to retake the lead. Aaron King received the ball in the area and shot past Dean Love in the visitors goal only to see the ball come back off the post. After a bit of pinball, it was the Winslow striker who had hit the post just seconds earlier, who fired home.

Aaron King then took the ball in the left hand channel and carried the ball into the box before drawing the goalkeeper Love. He calmly rolled the ball across the box for Courtney Massay to sweep the ball home.

United held on to gain promotion to bring Step 5 to Elmfields Gate next season.

Congratulations to everyone at Winslow United Football Club for their success!
