Addicks fall to narrow defeat against PNE

Charlton 1 Preston North End 2

The Addicks fell to a narrow defeat at the hands of Preston North End at The Valley on Saturday afternoon.

Charlton started brightly and took a well-deserved lead through Joe Rankin-Costello but the visitors struck back before the break and then netted in the second half. Preston held out despite late pressure from the Addicks.

The game was open from the start, with Greg Docherty inches away from giving the Addicks a first-minute lead with a wonderfully struck left-footed volley from 20 yards that just cleared the crossbar.

Will Mannion then made a low save to his right to keep out Brad Potts.

Rankin-Costello’s fourth-minute header, from Tyreece Campbell’s cross from the left, bounced back off the post.

Campbell was causing the visitors’ defence plenty of problems and had a 17th-minute left-footed shot from the edge of the area beaten away by Preston goalkeeper Daniel Iversen.

The Addicks took an 18th-minute lead in familiar fashion, from a long-throw from the right wing. Carey’s throw flicked off a Preston head and fell to Rankin-Costello to sweep home on his return to the Charlton starting lineup.

On the counter-attack Campbell’s shot from the left was saved by Iversen and Lyndon Dykes, inside the six-yard box, couldn’t quite reach the rebound.

After Charlton’s bright start, Preston’s 25th-minute equaliser also came from a throw from the right wing. This one was thrown short and the visitors created room for Potts to cross. His whipped ball was met well by Lewis Dobbin, who flicked a header across goal and into the net.

After an opening half hour with plenty of chances the game slowed and chances became fewer, and the sides went in level at 1–1 at half-time.

The visitors had the better of the start of the second half without creating much, while the Addicks were restricted to a powerful, left-footed shot from Docherty from outside the area which Iversen was able to gather.

Preston took the lead 20 minutes into the second half with an excellent counter-attack. In a three-on-two situation Dobbin fed Potts with a well-weighted pass, allowing the wing-back the opportunity to guide past the advancing Mannion.

The Addicks looked to get back in the game and nearly did when Fevrier got inside the box on the left wing and drove to the byline. He smashed a ball across goal which hit a Preston defender. It could have gone anywhere and was goalbound, but it struck a grateful Iversen and went behind for a Charlton corner.

Moments later Dykes and Matty Godden both went for the same ball in the penalty area and maybe got in each other’s way, the shot deflected off a defender and behind for another corner.

As stoppage time approached the Addicks piled on the pressure and Godden saw a shot from close range bravely blocked over by a Preston defender.

Dykes then had a shot saved by Iversen before Lewis Gibson made an incredible last-ditch tackle to deny Dykes when the Charlton striker looked to be in behind the Preston defence.

Charlton weren’t able to find an equaliser. With four games remaining, the Addicks sit five points above the relegation zone ahead of next Saturday’s trip to Hillsborough to take on Sheffield Wednesday.

Bexhill United wrap up Easter with derby win over Little Common

Easter Monday morning brought the eagerly anticipated derby clash with near neighbours Little Common in front of a bumper crowd.

With Common in the ascendency in recent years in this fixture, Bexhill started like a train with the kind of energy, pace and pressure that has been a hallmark of their best performances this season.

On eight minutes the Pirates were ahead. Finn Holter hit a long ball straight down the middle, Jack Shonk rose to nod it on and Will Saunders connected with the sweetest half volley to send the Bexhill fans wild.

Richie Welch was getting forward from right back and causing problems but it was another defender, Callum Brand, who doubled the scoring. He was first to latch onto a loose ball from a Max Hollobone corner and crashed it into the net.

Two-nil at the break was no less than Bexhill deserved but Common came out with renewed intent.

Attacking down the slope the home side started to get back in contention and went close with a couple of chances that left Bexhill riding their luck. This was a proper derby and on the hour the hosts pulled one back through Sam Ellis.

It set up a nail-biting finale. Bexhill had a strong shout for a penalty waved away and Charlie Scarles carved out a good opportunity that was dealt with.

At the other end, Common threw everything, including Kenny Pogue, at getting an equaliser but Dale Penn and the rest of the defensive unit, dug deep. Holter pulled off a couple of fine saves against his former club as Bexhill had held out to secure a fine win.

5-2 win over Bexhill United puts Borough top of LSERWL Division One South

On Easter Sunday the Women’s team travelled to local rivals Bexhill United, knowing the a win would put them top of the league for the first time since November.
With Beth Creese unavailable and Nic Baitup still injured, Chris Day still had a strong squad to choose from. With Bexhill setting up to go long and direct on the Polegrove’s bumpy surface, Borough knew they would be up against a team that would test their technical build.

However, it only took two minutes for The Sports to open the scoring with Izzy Payne finishing off a smart move with her left foot. Borough doubled their lead in the 10th minute, after a well worked corner saw Charlotte Gurr’s cross reach Molly Hill, whose flick was turned in by captain Kellie Larkin.

20 minutes later and Borough made it three, with Gurr’s cross yet again casing chaos in the Bexhill box, and Player of the Match Elena Beck found the net to score her first senior goal.

With Borough on top, Molly Hill also had a goal ruled out having judged to have fouled the goalkeeper, but she wasn’t to be denied in the 35th minute when she did get on the scoresheet, after Lola Dulake’s cross fell into her path.

Bexhill still looked threatening on the break, and indeed Poppy Harrod pulled one back just before the break for the hosts.

Day chose to make two changes at half time, with Phoebe Cram making way for Ruby Starkey, and Abbie Tucker replacing Becky Simmons. The game wasn’t over though, as Bexhill pulled another one back around the hour mark, with Soph Moule being bundled into the goal having cleanly caught the ball. Despite protests the goal was given, with Moule needing treatment for some time.

The Sports reacted well, with Molly Hill scoring her second of the game after a smart pass from Gurr. With the game finishing 5-2, Borough took all three points and go top of the table.

Chris Day said after the game: “We knew it would be a tricky game on a pitch like that, but the players got the job done and it’s another game won to keep us in contention for the league title.
