Addicks draw with Mansfield Town at The Valley
Charlton 0 Mansfield Town 0
Charlton hit the woodwork and probably should have had a penalty in a tight 0-0 draw with Mansfield Town at The Valley.
After an even first half, the Addicks were in the ascendancy in the second half but despite a number of chances were unable to find the final touch in front of goal.
Nathan Jones made three changes from the side that drew at Lincoln last weekend, with Thierry Small, Conor Coventry and Matty Godden starting as Charlton began the game in a 3-5-2 formation.
The Addicks had an early chance to take the lead when Tyreece Campbell did well, drifting in off the right wing and playing in Karoy Anderson. The midfieder’s first touch was good but his second was a little heavy and his shot at goal was blocked behind by the onrushing Mansfield goalkeeper, Christy Pym.
Mansfield had some half-chances and a number of corners but their best chance fell to Lucas Akins who blazed wide from Frazer Blake-Tracy’s cross.
With the last chance of the half, Lloyd Jones headed Conor Coventry’s cross at Pym who gathered comfortably.
Miles Leaburn replaced Matty Godden at half-time and immediately gave the Mansfield defence no-end of problems.
Within three minutes of the second half starting Leaburn appeared to be wrestled to the ground in the penalty area by former Addick Deji Oshilaja but referee Benjamin Speedie remained unmoved.
It was 10 minutes later when Leaburn went through on goal from Tyreece Campbell’s delicate flick. Pym was again out quickly and Leaburn fired his effort wide.
That chance was immediately followed by a header off the crossbar by the 21-year-old striker, who leapt highest to connect with Tyreece Campbell’s in-swinging cross from the left.
Another substitute Luke Berry then fired over, as the Charlton pressure continued.
Despite the second-half control, the Addicks were unable to find a winner, making it back-to-back scoreless draws in the league.
Charlton have a week off now, before the trip to Northampton Town next Saturday.

Report: Charlton 0-0 Stags
By Ronnie Langhorne
Mansfield Town earned a hard-fought point at The Valley in a 0-0 draw against Charlton Athletic.
Both sides had good chances to claim all three points and were turned down penalty claims as the game ended goalless in the capital.
The meeting was the first between the two teams since November 2018, where The Addicks defeated Mansfield 5-0 at The Valley in an FA Cup replay.
Manager Nigel Clough made two changes to the side that fell to a narrow defeat last weekend against Huddersfield Town.
Last Saturday’s captain Aden Flint and midfielder George Maris made way for returning defenders Elliott Hewitt and Jordan Bowery, with versatile performer Lucas Akins returning to the attack after playing full-back against The Terriers last weekend.
Mansfield came into this encounter a point above their hosts, who sat four places below the Amber and Blue in 14th.
Six minutes into the first period, midfielder Karoy Anderson had a golden opportunity to give the home side an early lead.
Played through by wing-back Tyreece Campbell, the playmaker appeared to only have Stags’ goalkeeper Christy Pym to beat, but was denied by a combination of the Northern Irish custodian and defender Jordan Bowery, who recovered excellently to help thwart the chance.
Stags had a couple of penalty shouts waved away by referee Benjamin Speedie three minutes later.
The first was a handball at close-range to cut out defender Frazer Blake-Tracy’s cross before seconds later Lucas Akins hit the deck inside the area under a heavy challenge but any claims for a spot-kick were quickly waved away.
Midfielder Keanu Baccus’ inswinging corner on 20 minutes caused the Addicks’ defence their next problem, half-clearing the ball at the back-post only as far as defender Frazer Blake-Tracy.
The left wing-back acrobatically found striker Will Evans in the centre of the box, but the Welshman’s header looped onto the roof of the net from just outside the six-yard box.
Forward Lucas Akins had a golden chance to fire Stags into what would have been a deserved lead seven minutes later.
Evans played a neat throughball from a central area to set Blake-Tracy racing away down the left and the defender’s cross was behind two Charlton defenders, finding Akins unmarked eight-yards from goal, who fired over the bar.
Half-an-hour into the encounter, receiving a square pass from Baccus just inside the area, Evans was unable to get the ball out of his feet to get his shot away and was eventually crowded out just inside the area.
Stags, who had started to take real control in South East London, passed up another opportunity to take the lead five minutes later.
Defender Deji Oshilaja took up an advanced position down the right and whipped in a dangerous cross to Evans, who could only steer the ball round the post from seven yards.
Mansfield headed into the break goalless at The Valley, unfortunate not to have the lead.
On 52 minutes, midfielder Louis Reed became the first player to receive a booking, his fifth of the season which will see him serve a one game suspension next Saturday, for a foul on defender Alex Mitchell inside the Stags’ half.
Leaburn should’ve given the home side the lead six minutes later, however, the forward could only skew his effort wide one-on-one with Pym.
A combination of the crossbar and post came to Pym, and Mansfield's rescue on the hour when Leaburn met Campbell’s inswinging cross inside the six-yard box, but was denied an opener by the woodwork.
Despite Charlton’s fast start in the second-half, Stags still posed a threat going forward and carved out a brilliant opening three minutes later.
Elliott Hewitt, who was the beneficiary of a superb volleyed cross by midfielder Aaron Lewis, fired the bouncing ball over the bar from close-range.
Mitchell was then booked on 73 minutes for a late challenge on Akins deep inside the Charlton half.
Lewis saw an effort from the edge of the area well blocked on 77 minutes, with the rebound falling to Jordan Bowery who drifted the ball over the bar in front of the travelling Stags fans.
With seven minutes to play, Oshilaja was shown a yellow card for a late slide on Campbell.
Chances were scarce in the final exchanges as both sides looked for a late winner.
Midfielder Conor Coventry was booked two minutes from time for a heavy tackle on substitute Hiram Boateng.
Stags saw out the three minutes of stoppage time to claim a well-deserved point, with Cargill receiving a booking in the final moments for a professional foul.
