Thanks to some quirks in the fixture calendar, and a postponement due to international call-ups, this afternoon would be Charlton first home Saturday league game since late October. It wasn’t plain sailing getting to The Valley today, with another ASLEF rail strike meaning that going by the Valley Express was only option (aside from driving), but when I arrived at my local stop a few minutes ahead of the scheduled departure time, it soon became apparent that the coach had already left, resulting in my needing to drive about 45 miles to catch up with it.
Since their last home game, a 2-1 victory against Cheltenham Town, Charlton have since exited the two remaining cup competitions they were involved in, first a dismal 2-0 defeat at League Two outfit Gillingham, followed by a defeat on penalties following a 1-1 draw to fellow League One outfit Reading in the EFL Trophy. Cambridge came into this game in dreadful form in the league, losing their last three games, including a 0-3 home loss to Lincoln City and a 5-0 defeat to Peterborough United.
