Report

Charlton 0 Wrexham 1

Charlton fell to a narrow defeat to play-off hopefuls Wrexham on Saturday, despite an encouraging showing at The Valley.

Oliver Rathbone’s first-half strike proved to be the difference for the Red Dragons, but it did not tell the full story with the Addicks enjoying the vast majority of the action throughout, without getting the goal their performance deserved.

The hosts were forced into an early change when Reece Burke was forced off through injury just 13 minutes into the action, replaced by Collins Sichenje for his home debut.

Despite the disruption, it was a bright start from Charlton, who dominated for the first half hour of proceedings, with a number of good opportunities passing them by.

On 20 minutes, Luke Berry was denied from 10 yards by a goal-saving block from Issa KaborĂ©, before Harry Clarke let a gilt-edge opportunity slip by when he dragged wide from an excellent position in the box with the goal gaping.

Despite the Addicks' promise, however, it was the visitors who would take the lead against the run of play on the half-hour mark. With the ball dropping to Rathbone on the edge of the box, he sent a smart, low volley into the bottom right-hand corner, out of reach of Will Mannion.

It was harsh on the home side who were looking the far more likely up to that point. Indeed, it was the Red Dragons’ first real foray into the final third which saw them take the lead which they would take into the break.

Nathan Jones shuffled his pack ahead of the restart by introducing Joe Rankin-Costello off the bench in place of Berry and there was nearly an instant impact when Sonny Carey’s ball into the box very nearly found the outstretched toe of Rankin-Costello, but he could not get the killer touch required.

At the other end moments later, it took a big block by Kayne Ramsay to deny Lewis O’Brien in the box and that would prove to be a rare opening for the away side.

The Addicks were still having the better of the action in the second half and came close when Tyreece Campbell headed over from close range from Lydon Dykes’ ball in, while Carey’s shot from the edge of the box deflected just wide of the post.

With 15 minutes remaining, Jones threw on Miles Leaburn and Charlie Kelman for Amari’i Bell and Conor Coventry to inject further attacking influence. Leaburn put over a volley from a tight angle on 81 minutes as Charlton piled on plenty of pressure as the clock ticked down.

In the 90th minute, a headed clearance fell kindly to Carey on the edge of the box who hit it sweetly on the volley with the ball looking to be heading in, only for Arthur Onkonkwo to produce a brilliant, points-saving stop for the Red Dragons.

In truth, Charlton’s efforts were well worthy of at least a point, but they it was the Welsh outfit who would hold on for all three.

The Addicks will dust themselves down and go again in SE7 next Saturday as they host Birmingham City.

Match Report | Pools 3-1 Carlisle
A Calvin Okike goal with his first touch in professional football sealed the points for Hartlepool United in an emphatic 3-1 win against high-flying Carlisle United at the Prestige Group Stadium in the Enterprise National League.

Tyrese Sinclair’s goal early in the first half placed Pools in the ascendancy before Alex Reid doubled the lead straight after the break. Following Harvey MacAdam’s red card at the hour mark, Okike made it three goals to the good for the hosts on 80 minutes, with Georgie Kelly getting on the scoresheet for Carlisle minutes later.

Nicky Featherstone made three changes from last weekend’s 4-3 victory away to Solihull Moors, giving starts to Nathan Sheron, Matty Daly and Tom Parkes for the clash against the Cumbrians. After a long-term knee injury, Vadaine Oliver returned to the squad for the first time since the end of October.

12 minutes in, Sinclair put Pools in front with a sensational solo run to make it three goals in the last two games. An audacious first touch over Jack Ellis set the winger on his way from the halfway line, who then brushed past Bevis Mugabi in the box before tucking his effort into the right corner from a tight angle.

Pools continued to apply pressure during the first period, with Sinclair and Cameron John combining expertly throughout, and almost had another on 44 minutes. After an error from Gabriel Breeze, Sheron picked up the ball and found Sinclair, whose curling strike just evaded the top-right corner.

Moments before half-time, John capped off a strong run into the box with a fizzing cross which troubled the Blues’ back line; his effort on the rebound dragged inches wide of the bottom-right corner.

Pools kept up the momentum after the break, and it didn’t take long for their advantage to be doubled – Reid making it two goals in as many games only a minute into the half. Daly guided the ball into the path of the striker, who rifled home into the bottom-left corner on the half-volley.

The visitors threatened as the half progressed – calling Jay Benn into action with a last-ditch tackle and Tom Parkes with a goal-line clearance – but matters got worse for Mark Hughes’ side when MacAdam was sent off on the hour mark, receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Sinclair.

In the 77th minute, Calvin Okike, only 15 seconds after coming on for his Pools and professional debut, made it three for the hosts, firing home on the rebound of Sam Folarin’s powerful strike with his first touch of the match.

However, Carlisle responded minutes later as Morgan Feeney’s neat flick slipped through Kelly, who slotted home into the bottom left corner from inside the box.

The home side could have had a fourth on 85 minutes, Jack Hunter’s close-range attempt drifting wide following a scramble in the box, but saw out the 3-1 victory to make it back-to-back league wins.

MATCH REPORT: SOUTH SHIELDS 3-1 WORKSOP TOWN

Paul Blackett hits 18 for the season with an exquisite brace against Worksop Town

The Mariners got off to a fantastic start at the 1st Cloud Arena.

However their golden chance to get the opener didn’t come until one minute before the half-time whistle, when Blackett’s sliding effort struck the back of the net.

Unfortunately for the home fans, the celebrations didn’t last long as a minute later Worksop Town found an equaliser through Josh Wilde.

In the second-half the hosts - like the first, started brilliantly, however this time making the visitors pay in the opening minutes.

Blackett again was on the scoresheet for his second of the evening.

Then with three minutes to go substitute Lennon Wheeldon got his name on the scoresheet.

The Mariners came into Tuesday night’s clash with Worksop Town hoping for a similar performance to the reverse fixture in which Watson’s Mariners triumphed in a comfortable 3-0 manner.

South Shields first real threatening opportunity didn’t come until the 23rd minute when the Mariners first corner off the evening saw Dan Ward come close to stabbing in the opener.

The hosts biggest chance of the game fell just moments after when Sonny Finch glided past the byline before fizzing in a cross that reached Ward, however his scuffed effort raised over the bar.

With just twelve minutes left to play in the first-half the Mariners were denied what seemed to be a sure penalty after Ward looked to be brought down after dribbling into the box.

Just moments later the Mariners got their breakthrough.

A wonderful ball was played through into Finch who picked out a perfect ball across the box into the path of a sliding Paul Blackett who opened the scoring.

However the celebrations were short lived as only a minute later Worksop Town’s Josh Wilde tucked in the equaliser.

As soon as the second-half whistle blew Ian Watson’s Mariners were attacking with real intent with Finch making Lewis Forshaw make an unbelievable save.

Unbelievably a minute later this relentless attacking nature from Watson’s men paid off as they were back in the lead right from the corner.

The corner saw Daniel Dodds play a rolling ball into Will Jenkins who struck the ball first-time for a cross right into Blackett’s path who cleverly stuck his foot out for the ball to bounce off the post and into the net.

Then three minutes before the full-time whistle substitutes Sean McGurk and Wheeldon linked up for a beautiful goal.

McGurk found himself through on the left and squared the ball into Wheeldon who made no mistake.

South Shields: Watson, Bainbridge (Sykes 67’), Morse, Blackett (Wheeldon 61’), Jenkins (Smith 88’), Ward (McGurk 79’), Mann, Finch, Scott, Dodds, Roles (Alcock 61’)
