Charlton Athletic 2 v 3 Morecambe

Good Friday 15th April 2022, Kick-off 15.00
EFL League One
The Valley, Charlton
Admission: Season Ticket
Programme: £3.00
Attendance: 10,700 (350 away)

To kick off my Easter weekend, I headed to The Valley for the penultimate time in what has been, for the most part, a painful season to endure littered with, at time, breathtaking incompetence on and off the field.

On paper, this looked a winnable game, with Charlton in 15th place in the table, following 15 wins and eight draws from 42 league games, and Morecambe struggling to keep their head above water in the club's first ever season in the third tier of English football, down in 20th place, following nine wins and eleven draws from their 42 league games, and are only out of the relegation zone on goal difference, with a one goal better record than Gillingham. Therein may lie the problem for Charlton, with the Addicks having virtually nothing left to play for apart from achieving a top half finish (from which they are currently a point adrift) and players trying to prove that they would be assets worth retaining in the inevitable squad shake-up in the summer, against a club with plenty to play for. Since Charlton disappointingly lost at home to Lincoln City 1-2, Charlton then drew 1-1 away at AFC Wimbledon, followed by a remarkable 0-1 win away at automatic promotion chasing Rotherham United - a result I certainly did not see coming. That has resulted in the Addicks enjoying four wins and just the one defeat in their last six games. When today's two clubs met earlier in the season, the match ended 2-2, which the Addicks throwing away a two goal lead.
