At the conclusion of my morning game at the Leyton Sports Ground, I then made my way back south across the river, via a bus to Canning Town, tube to North Greenwich and another bus to just outside the much more familiar surroundings of The Valley.
The feeling now for us Charlton fans really is wanting the season to end as soon as possible, with the latest instalment of a roller coaster season lurching from winning runs to losing runs (sadly, more of the latter) providing five consecutive defeats, and without a goal in their last three games. Since the dismal 0-4 home defeat against Oxford United, I had to miss the home game against MK Dons on the following Tuesday, as I was committed to seeing John Bishop on a date rearranged for that evening. That game ended in a 0-2 defeat, and a trip to play-off incumbents Sheffield Wednesday also ended in a 2-0 defeat. That left the Addicks down in 16th place, following 11 wins and six draws from 34 league games, and it is fortunate that the clubs in and around the relegation spots have not been taking advantage of Charlton’s poor form, with an eight point cushion from 21st place Morecambe. The only causes for optimism for the Addicks was striker Jayden Stockley should be fit to start after being out since December until coming on as a half time substitute last Saturday, and a very good recent record against Sunderland – miraculously winning at the Stadium of Light earlier in the season in Johnnie Jackson’s first game in caretaker charge following the sacking of Nigel Adkins. And indeed, Sunderland have only beaten Charlton once in 13 games, spanning 11 years. Sadly as usual for Sunderland, their season has not been without bumps in the road, but they occupied a play-off spot going into this game, in sixth place following 17 wins and eight draws from their 35 league games.
