So, after a two and a half week game between home league fixtures between the Plymouth and Ipswich games, I was back at The Valley for the second time in four days today, to watch us play another side from East Anglia. However, in many ways, the two clubs could not be more different, in terms of history, expectations, finances and squad depth. On paper, Cambridge would have seemed to be "easier" opposition, but the reality promised to be quite different.
Today was the final occasion of the club's initiative of offering season ticket holders three free tickets. Once again I took advantage of this, as well as relocating from my usual West Stand seat to a place amongst the more vociferous Upper North Stand for this game.
Charlton's convincing 2-0 win against Ipswich Town on Tuesday elevated the Addicks to 14th place in the table, following seven wins and five draws from 21 league games, creating an eight point gap from the relegation zone, but still ten points adrift of the play-off spots. Cambridge were promoted as runners-up from League Two, and this is their first season in the third tier of English football since 2002, a period which contained a nine season stay in non league. And they've had a very solid season so far, coming into this game one place behind Charlton, in 15th place, following six wins and four draws from their 21 league games, although a run which saw them pick up just a point from four games was broken in spectacular style on Tuesday, when they won 0-5 away at Cheltenham, who were above them in the table.
