Today would be the first of a run of four consecutive Charlton home games that have been switched from a 3pm Saturday kick off for the benefit of television coverage on Sky. This fixture was switched to perhaps the worst possible option, a midday kick-off on the Sunday, particularly as it would mean starting my journey with a rail replacement bus service, although at least it did give me the opportunity to take in another groundhop yesterday.
Since beating Derby County surprisingly convincing in their last home game, Charlton only managed to pick up one point from their subsequent two away games, losing to a goal in the eighth minute of added on time at Bristol City, despite having taken the lead in the second half and the home side being reduced to ten men, and then salvaging a good point at leaders West Bromwich Albion, that time twice coming from behind and salvaging a point in the third minute of added on time following a rather fortunate looking penalty award. Charlton came into this game in ninth place in the table.
Preston have very much been under the radar so far this season, and it was very surprising to see that they came into this weekend in second place, following seven wins and four draws from their 14 league games. They had lost just once in their last 11 league games, winning six.
Ahead of kick-off, this being the closest fixture to Remembrance Day, The Last Post was played and immaculately observed by all those in attendance.
