In all honesty, I was hoping that Charlton would not be scehduled to play at home on Boxing Day, with no public transport available to get me to the game. So instead, I had to drive, a drive that was not a particularly pleasant experience, with heavy rain intermittently falling as I drove along the dual carriageway and motorway, and with a few traffic jams along the way, before parking up in Charlton village, about a 20 minute walk away from The Valley.
Charlton came into this game still struggling badly in the face of a chronic injury list, and had still not claimed three points since beating Derby County 3-0 at home back in mid October. Since then, 11 league games have yielded just four points from four draws, although they drew their last two games 2-2 - first, at home against Hull City, a game I had to miss as it was rearranged to the Friday night which coincided with my work's Christmas do, which I had already committed to, and then away at QPR on Saturday. Charlton came into this game in 18th place, following six wins and seven draws from their 23 league games, six points clear of the relegation zone. Bristol City were in eighth place, just two points adrift of the play-off positions, following nine wins and eight draws from their 23 league games. When the two clubs met at Ashton Gate in late October, Bristol City won 2-1 with a 98th minute winner, a result which started Charlton's current eleven game run without a win.
